Lal Bahadur Shashtri Bhavan Varanasi

Ahmedabad, India

The Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Paternal House, inaugurated in 2018, restores and reinterprets the ancestral home of India’s former Prime Minister. The project transforms a site of memory into a living symbol of humility and leadership.

Narrative Design

The vision was to create a space that educates and inspires by narrating the journey of Shastri Ji’s life. Simplicity and integrity—values central to his philosophy—shape the architectural language, preserved through traditional materials and honest detailing.

Spatial Storytelling

Each gallery unfolds as a chapter in his journey, from his early life in Varanasi to his years as Prime Minister. The design prioritizes openness and visibility, ensuring a smooth narrative flow through immersive displays and reflective pauses.

Restored Heritage

Original elements—courtyard layouts, timber details, and traditional lime-plastered surfaces—are preserved wherever possible, grounding the project in its authentic past. Sensitive restoration techniques ensure that the home’s character remains intact while supporting modern museum functions.

The design also acknowledges the paternal house as part of Varanasi’s social fabric. Shaded courts, open thresholds, and welcoming circulation encourage community visits and educational activities. In this way, the home continues to serve as a living institution, connecting Shastri Ji’s legacy with the people he dedicated his life to.
